Letter: Teachers should lock down privacy settings on social media accounts

In regards to the Jan. 14 article, “Kennewick teen charged with trying to solicit teacher for sex,” I would like to add a different viewpoint. Although the Kennewick teen’s actions are unacceptable and inappropriate, I noticed that the article didn’t mention any wrongdoing on the middle school teacher’s part.

I feel that if the teacher were more mindful of her social media account, the incident would not have happened. In the settings on a Facebook account, you will easily be able to find the “Privacy Settings.” These adjustments give the Facebook user complete control of who has the ability to contact you and what you see.

I believe that it should be required that a businessman or woman, especially a teacher, should be required to set their social media accounts on a private adjustment in order to keep their personal life and business life separated. I have seen other stories like this in the past and I feel that teachers should respond to these stories by making sure that their accounts are non-accessible to anyone but their friends and family.
