Letter: Nuclear power needed now in response to climate change

Nuclear power was in the spotlight when the United Nations Climate Change Conference concluded last month. Top climate scientists have stated that rapid expansion of nuclear energy production capacity must be part of the world’s response to climate change.

Judy Woodruff interviewed Robert Bryce of the Manhattan Institute and Fred Krupp of the Environmental Defense Fund on the PBS NewsHour on Dec. 14, in a segment entitled “Will the Paris accord change our climate outlook?” Ms. Woodruff asks whether the 195-nation accord signals a fundamental change in how we will get our energy. Nuclear energy is at the center of the ensuing debate!

The Paris global awakening carries with it huge new opportunities for the Tri-Cities business community. On Dec. 15, Dr. James Conca of Richland posted “Paris COP21 And The Urgent Need For More Nuclear Energy” on Forbes.com. He cites an International Energy Agency 2°C solution that projects construction costs, between now and 2050, of about $8 trillion for nuclear plants, together with $20 trillion for the renewables wind and solar!
