Letter: Vote yes on local school levies Feb. 9

Public education in America is vital to the success of our nation. It is what sets our country apart from others. Only in the United States do all children have the ability to attend school from kindergarten through high school graduation without tuition.

On Feb. 9, the Pasco School District, along with many other local districts, asks voters to approve a renewal of the current maintenance and operations levy. This is a replacement for the current levy, which will expire at the end of 2016.

I urge voters in the Columbia Basin to continue to support local schools by voting “yes” when their ballots arrive in the mail. In Pasco, 65 percent of levy dollars go to supporting teaching and learning.

As a former Pasco teacher and building principal, I can attest to the difference that levy dollars make in this area. Elementary schools benefit by having assistant principals, librarians, counselors, nurses, and art, music and physical education teachers, to name a few.

The wide variety of experiences that are provided by these key people help to expand the world of our younger students. Many times students find a niche in one of these areas, which keeps them in school succeeding!
