Letter: ‘Tyranny’ misused by both sides of political spectrum
Tyranny! We seem to use this word quite loosely these days. A word that, according to Oxford, means “cruel and oppressive government rule,” here in America seems to mean, “I didn’t vote for it, so therefore I’m oppressed!”
Apparently, in modern-day America, a tyrant is the democratically elected official who happens to be on the other side of the political spectrum than ourselves.
If you ask the Democrats, Bush was a monster who violated every civil right Americans have. Never mind that he did it with the full support of our democratically elected officials.
Flash forward a few years and now President Obama has broken every law imaginable and positioned himself to become Supreme High Chancellor of this new American dictatorship, while simultaneously being considered, by Republicans, the weakest president in the country’s history!
There are many people in the world today who experience tyranny, people who have no control over what happens to them. Under the cruel fist of truly oppressive dictators, they watch their women and children butchered by soldiers. We are not oppressed and to pretend we are is a slap in the face to the people who are truly victims.
