Letter: State representative’s comments about Muslims are uncalled for

The Seattle Times’ Dec. 8 article “Anti-Islamic rhetoric shakes Snoqualmie’s Muslim families” reported that state Rep. Jay Rodne, R-Snoqualmie, posted comments on Facebook, saying “Islam is incompatible with western civilization.” In another, Rodne called Muslims “barbaric.” What does our representative want to achieve saying such a comment?

Most of us are immigrants to this country: Asian Americans, Muslim Americans, European, Hispanic and African descendants. All are important parts of the USA. We call this country our homeland, care for our families and country. America is infused with different cultures, religions (or nonreligion) and ideas that contribute to our common American goals and values. That makes our country very unique and strong.

Rep. Rodne’s Facebook comments broadly directed toward Muslims are hateful and uncalled for. Does he understand that his comments divide and weaken our country while feeding the extremists? Is that really what he wants?
