Letter: Was frontier justice served in Tri-City massacre of 1906?

I was particularly interested in the Halloween Tri-City Herald story of the 1906 Poplar Grove massacre.

Two lawmen and a posse member were killed and a sheriff was shot and grievously injured. The principal culprit was shot to death at the massacre site; however, his accomplice was captured. The accounts vary as to what became of the accomplice. He just disappeared and apparently no great effort was made to track him down (if he escaped).

Look, the guy was involved in the murders of two lawmen and the maiming of a sheriff. Certainly a case could be made that “frontier justice” was served.
