Letter: Age discrimination is a problem
We all know that discrimination against race, sexual orientation, religion and sex is wrong, but it seems like we don’t hear much about age discrimination.
Maybe it’s because most people don’t see it or society is just accustomed to the stereotypes about the other age groups. Elderly people are protected from age discrimination at work since they sometimes have trouble finding a job because they are judged as incapable of completing tasks, or seen as weak and fragile.
Teens and children are also judged by their age. Teens are often perceived as lazy, careless, irresponsible and immature. They are even talked about as if they are a whole different species. Children are sometimes viewed as energetic, hyper or not able to understand much.
I think we should take the time to actually listen to one another, because I find that’s how age groups are misunderstood. Don’t completely judge a person by their age, because it doesn’t apply to everyone.
