Letter: Why isn’t consent taught in sex ed classes?

As of today, California is the only state in the nation that requires teaching consent in sex education classes. Why is it that only one out of 50 states includes such an important topic in public schools?

Consent is something that all young students should be required to learn, and the Tri-Cities isn’t an exception. Considering the fact that sexual assault happens very often, it would seem like an obvious thing to teach consent in sex ed classes. Young men and women need to be aware of such a topic at an early stage, and high school would be an ideal time.

When will Tri-Cities begin to take steps in the right direction?
