Letter: Why can’t the spending and holiday decorating wait until after Thanksgiving?
In a recent Family Circus cartoon, a mother with small children walks in a shopping area, decorated for Christmas. One of the children asks his mother, “Mommy, aren’t they having Thanksgiving this year?”
This really struck a chord with me, because the way Thanksgiving is skipped over has been a pet peeve of mine for years. When I ask store employees about the early onset of decorating and holiday sales, I’ve been told it is to remind people to start shopping (spending) early, or to mail their packages early. One employee told me that they had a Christmas ad televised in their establishment, so they just left up the decorations.
Of all the people on Earth, Americans should be the most thankful. American has its problems, but it’s a wonderful country. Why else would people from all over the world risk their lives to come here? Because it’s so terrible? I don’t think so! I am grateful and proud to be a citizen of the United States of America.
Why can’t the spending frenzy and the holiday decorating wait until at least the day AFTER Thanksgiving? Take time to be thankful, Americans!
