Letter: Demand Kennewick School Board redraw high school boundaries
Now that the flagship west side schools are insulated, the Kennewick School Board wants neighborhood schools and no high school boundary changes.
When Horse Heaven and Southridge were built, a neighborhood plan was proposed but the board shot it down and drew boundaries north and south for more diversity, numbers weren’t equal. There’s been little growth east, some happening south, majority west and into Badger Canyon. About eight years ago the district redrew the boundaries giving Southridge some of Kamiakin’s and some of Kennewick’s, the numbers still weren’t equal.
Because Kennewick and Southridge have less students they are forced to take any transfer they can regardless of the type of student. Meanwhile Kamiakin can pick and choose because they are continually overloaded, remember the majority of growth west? There seems to be a bias amongst some of the board and administration.
It’s time the east and south stop fighting over areas/kids and stand together to demand the board redraw the boundary with more equity in mind, numbers aren’t equal. I’m not asking to bus across town but it can be more diverse. Let your voice be heard at the meetings or at the polls.
