Letter: Thanks to community for Meals on Wheels groundbreaking
Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels’ Oct. 21 groundbreaking event for a new kitchen and office was a huge success, and we owe much gratitude.
More than 100 people, including Benton County Commissioner Jerome Delvin, Richland Mayor David Rose, Richland Mayor Pro Tem Phil Lemley, Kennewick City Council member John Trumbo, the Senior Life Resources board of directors, and the Meals on Wheels advisory council attended the event at New Vintage Church.
Project manager and Meals on Wheels volunteer Nick Castorina is generously donating his services for this project, and volunteer driver Don Pratt is our builder. William and Christine Ziegler provided a generous discount on the land purchase price in 2012.
Gus Kittson at Kennewick Industrial and Equipment Supply has kicked off our kitchen equipment adoption program by adopting 12 pieces of equipment. Other adoptions include Salon Koru, Senior Life Resources Board President Nancy Aldrich, Gini Blacksmith and Spokane Restaurant Supply.
Meals on Wheels provides nutrition to seniors and vulnerable adults throughout Benton and Franklin counties. Established in 1974 with just 12 clients, our 320-plus amazing volunteers will serve 1,600 clients this year.
Although much fundraising and work remain, I am encouraged and proud to see our community rally to help care for our seniors.
