Letter: Children attending Jefferson deserve a full library
My family recently purchased a home in the Jefferson boundaries. While I originally had concerns about sending my children to Jefferson because of the challenges it faces, I wanted to respect the school district boundaries and enrolled my children at the school. After communicating with the school counselor, the office staff, my children’s teachers, and the school PTA, my fears about sending my children to the school were assuaged.
However, I was horrified to learn that not only is the Wi-Fi system out of date and insufficient for the children to use consistently, the school is also losing a large portion of its library to accommodate another kindergarten class. While I understand that smaller class sizes is an important goal of the district, losing a library is not an acceptable solution.
Additionally, I learned that there are six empty elementary school classrooms at other elementary schools that could be used to accommodate some or all of the preschool or special ed programs currently located at Jefferson. If the district is unable to expand the school with a portable, they should instead utilize the empty classrooms to relocate some of the special programs.
The children attending Jefferson deserve a full library.
