Letter: When is the time to talk about gun violence?

A new motto, “As American as mom, apple pie and gun violence.” Can we, amidst our differences, at least admit that what we are doing now is not working?

On average 36 Americans die daily, from either accidental or intentional means, from a firearm. Can you imagine the outcry if that number of American deaths were caused by a foreign entity such as ISIS?

Americans killing Americans though? It seems to be totally acceptable in our sick culture. Our society glorifies violence. Having weapons of mass destruction so readily available to anyone and everyone hasn’t had positive results.

Address mental heath issues you say? In a budget crisis, one of the first things cut is mental health funding. More guns? With that logic you would smoke more cigarettes to cure lung cancer and drink more alcohol to cure your ailing liver.

We have politicians blathering on for years about the four dead in Benghazi. While tragic, when asked about the nine killed in an Oregon school, they say “these things happen” and “now is not the time to talk about guns.”

When gentlemen, when?
