Letter: Don’t blindly follow actions against God’s higher authority

David H. Brown’s column (TCH, Sept. 27) was well-written and thought-provoking. While something may be legal per the local government, it doesn’t mean we have to participate in that action if it is in violation with God’s higher authority. He notes many examples where people blindly followed the authorities and the resulting tragedies.

Romans Chapter 13 is often quoted as the biblical directive to obey the government authorities, but there are many examples of believers, from Old Testament prophets to Jesus’ apostles in the New Testament, where God’s higher power was followed and was contrary to the local law. In those days, those who refused to disobey God were imprisoned or martyred. Today, those who follow Jesus in the Middle East may become martyrs while in the U.S., it may preclude believers from career choices which require actions contrary to their faith.

The book of Romans is a great treatise on man’s selfish nature, how our free choice allows justification through faith in Christ, and how to live out our lives for Him.

As man continues to redefine values as he “evolves,” it is good to know there is a bedrock of truth to live by in God’s word.
