Letter: Help support Mental Illness Awareness Week

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and participants across the country are bringing awareness to mental illness through Mental Illness Awareness Week, Oct. 4-10.

NAMI fights stigma, provides support, educates the public and advocates for equal care to improve the lives of the tens of millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

This year the theme revolves around building a movement through the new Stigma Free initiative. Being Stigma Free means learning about and educating others on mental illness, focusing on connecting with people to see each other as individuals and not a diagnosis, and taking action on mental health issues.

Your local NAMI Tri-Cities Affiliate supports the following events during Mental Illness Awareness Week:

▪ Hidden Pictures is an award-winning documentary on mental illness around the world. The screening is at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at Lourdes Counseling Center, 1175 Carondelet Drive, Richland.

▪ “The Tri-Cities Summit: The Faith Community and Mental Health,” Oct. 9, Richland. To register, call Emmaus Counseling Center at 509-946-1430.

▪ “Stigma and Mental Illness,” a presentation at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Lourdes Counseling Center, 1175 Carondelet Drive, Richland.

We invite you to join us this week
