Letter: Golf carts should not have priority on Leslie Road

I saw yet another accident on Leslie Road caused, undoubtedly, by a golf cart crossing the road. The wall at the golf course does not permit drivers to see carts coming until they’re nearly on top of them.

This is nowhere near enough time for one to react and, unfortunately, most drivers slam on their brakes not knowing if the cart will stop or proceed into traffic. Having a “yellow” light of warning is pointless. The cart is already outside the fence line. Golf carts should NOT have priority over a heavily-trafficked street.

I am in the process of gathering statistics on the number of accidents in that area and plan to petition the city of Richland to remove the fence and light. At least give drivers an opportunity to see what’s coming. And, I’m sure golfers will know when it’s safe to cross the road.
