Letter: Why do so many people disagree with teachers belonging to a union?

Recently we have been inundated with rhetoric about teacher salaries. Some facts to consider:

To Mr. Hewitt, Should we set teachers’ salaries the same way you in the Legislature set yours? Very out in the open and transparent right?

Why do so many people disagree with teachers belonging to a union? Nearly every other profession has unions. Police, firefighters, municipal workers, etc.

We expect our teachers to educate, discipline, baby sit, and be role models for our children. We also require them to attend classes as the curriculum changes. Expect them to spend the extra time with the student who may be having problems at home or school, spend their own money to buy the “extras” to do all this and yet we don’t think they should earn a salary that is comparable to the union workers, many who have nothing more than time and a lunch box invested in their profession.

And then, those who control this wonder why there is a shortage of teachers. Come on!
