Letter: Parents who choose to homeschool their children are those who value education
In his Aug. 12 article titled “There are still reasons to steer clear of home schooling,” syndicated columnist Dan K. Thomasson reveals his limited knowledge of and experience with home schooling.
Mr. Thomasson seems to indicate that the perceived lack of government regulation of home schooling calls into question the effectiveness of this form of education. There will always be poor examples of home schooling.
However, regardless of their own level of formal education, the majority of parents who choose to home school their children are those who value education. These parents understand that academic, social, and spiritual training are all of the utmost importance in developing competent, confident, well-educated men and women who will be positive contributors to our society.
While there are many well-educated, professional, caring teachers in our nation’s public schools, the current public school system clearly demonstrates that increased government regulation does not increase effectiveness.
Mr. Thomasson would do well to broaden his perspective of home schooling. The academic and social success of most home-schooled students is becoming increasingly obvious.
