Letter: We should continue to fund Planned Parenthood
Mankind’s reproductive system is faulty, in that we accumulate offspring. Other species bear the next offspring when young are on their own.
Until the last century abortion has been the method of limiting births. About 100 years ago birth control was developed, preventing pregnancy and the need for abortion. In 1920 Margaret Sanger and Associates opened the first birth control clinic, the forerunner of Planned Parenthood. Countless abortions have been avoided because unwanted pregnancies were avoided.
People argue about when life begins. There is no argument. Life began either in the Garden of Eden or billions of years ago, with the ability to reproduce its own kind.
People advocate for “choice,” the right to an abortion, but actually women have always had the right to an abortion. The question is will a woman have available the means to a medically safe abortion procedure.
The Aug. 17 issue of Time magazine has an article on fetal tissue.
The preamble of the Constitution of the United States includes the phrase “promote the general welfare.” Birth control is a public health issue, Planned Parenthood being an implementing agency.
We should continue to fund Planned Parenthood. It is a nonprofit corporation and depends on public funding and private donations.
