Herald letters show mixed reaction to Easter Sunday drag show in Richland | Opinion

A point of view on drag shows, kids

Adults reading to kids is beautiful, and I wish more parents would read to kids. I do not understand why male adults insist on incongruent adult entertainment with story time. Drag shows are adult entertainment. So, why did we stop protecting our children’s innocence?

Is Queer Joy for All Ages? The statements expose the motive loud and clear. Since when is the right the only group that cares for the well-being and safety of our children? People can live their lives however they see fit. Whatever happens behind doors between two consenting adults is none of anybody’s concern. However, when children are brought into adult-only activity, we must stand up and say no!

We should ask ourselves why adult males dressed like women are so interested in spending time with our children.

Things worth grooming in kids

I’m reflecting on the protesters in our community who claim drag shows are a means of “grooming” children. Perhaps they are concerned their innocent children will start to enjoy flamboyant clothes and show tunes, but does that warrant vandalism and threatening letters? Our community is rife with worse forms of grooming. Our children are groomed to esteem violence and value rifles more than people. Groomed to consume more than their share and throw away the excess. Groomed to hate those who are different and do it in the name of Jesus. If you don’t want your kids to see a drag show, keep them at home. But meanwhile, groom them to exhibit compassion, generosity and respect.

Remember, the day was Easter

There is a lot of outrage from supporters of the Emerald Of Siam regarding the complaints about the Easter Sunday drag show. Drag shows have been happening in the Tri-Cities for decades with no public outcry, so why now?

For me it was timing. Easter Sunday is probably the most important day of the year for Christians. Why did the Emerald of Siam insist on having it Easter Sunday? Why couldn’t they have recognized the importance of that particular day and scheduled it for Saturday or even the following Sunday or any other day? Why Easter Sunday? This is the modus operandi of the activist part of this movement.

This whole kerfuffle could have been avoided had they considered the feelings of a huge portion of our population rather than bending to the wishes of a very small minority. I fear the Emerald of Siam may have sacrificed more valued customers than they have gained, but it’s only my opinion.

It’s a matter of following the law

I support the recall of the Richland School Board members Byrd, Williams and Bird. They broke the law, plain and simple. This is not a liberal vs conservative nor a Republican vs Democrat issue. This is three school board members breaking the law with their vote to make masks optional in the schools while the governor’s mandate/law was still in effect. I didn’t like wearing a mask, but I wore one because laws are not something you pick and choose which you’ll comply with. All three took an oath to uphold the laws and constitution of the state, and yet they didn’t.

They were warned by Board member Rick Jansons, their own school attorney and the school superintendent they were breaking the law with their vote to make masks optional in the schools. In fact, they were told they were also putting their state funding at risk. Yet they still went ahead with their mask vote. They should be held accountable for their actions and they should pay their own attorney fees.
