Letters: Drive-thru kindness, Kenosha shooting, vote by mail and more | Aug. 30
Thanks for being kind in drive-thru
A silver-haired lady waited in line to order dinner at McDonald’s in Richland. When it was her turn to pay, the cashier told her that the young man in the black pickup ahead of her had also paid for her dinner. Thank you to that young man. I know that your kindness will resonate to others!

Swift action called for in Kenosha
Less than three minutes after arriving on the scene of a domestic dispute, a police officer in Kenosha, Wis., shot Jacob Blake, who broke up the dispute in question- in the back, seven times in full view of his young children. Mr. Blake is now paralyzed from the waist down.
The attack of this unarmed black man by police officers, in broad daylight, in direct view of the public eye, is an appalling act of systemic racial violence.
Kenosha officials have made no effort to denounce the actions of this officer or the police department, and worse, no justice is being served.
Justice can’t wait. The Kenosha police officer who shot Jacob Blake must be fired and arrested immediately. District Attorney Michael Graveley, Mayor John Antaramian and Attorney General Josh Kaul must immediately fire and arrest the cop who attempted to murder.

My way is the only way to see things
If you are for All Lives Matter, Law and Order, Made in America, protecting yourself, family and home, capitalism rather than socialism or communism, freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, the Declaration of Independence, standing for the national anthem, securing our borders, for jobs and the American way of life, then you have no choice but to vote for President Trump to be reelected president. Ever since he was elected, we have all enjoyed the best economy for everyone. The Democrats and news media have tried everything they could to destroy him and his family. Even impeachment. Nothing has worked, now we have the pandemic and this is their last chance to keep him from being re-elected.
For you who don’t see it that way, all I can say to you is, “You can’t fix stupid!”

Vote Sharon Brown
Sharon Brown has developed a broad and unique skill set that will make her an outstanding judge. As a business lawyer, city prosecutor, Mayor Pro Tem, and state senator for the past eight years, her experience is superior to all other candidates. That is why I will be voting for her to be our next Benton-Franklin Superior Court Judge, and I ask that you do as well.
She is extremely qualified for the position, having received her J.D. from the University of New Hampshire School of Law, which is ranked in the top five programs in the country for Intellectual Property law. She also did post JD study study and has attended the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine School of Law, which is ranked #1 in dispute resolution in the country.
Throughout her eight years in the Legislature, Sharon Brown has achieved a rare 100% attendance record and has never missed a single vote. She will bring that same dedication as a Superior Court judge for Benton and Franklin counties.
Please join me in voting for Sharon Brown as our next Superior Court Judge.

Careless words harm our ideals
Always an independent voter, I am appalled at the constant and untrue labeling of the Democratic Party as “socialists.” Our country has evolved into a balance of capitalism and social programs. The industrial revolution brought wealth and prosperity to many and to our country. During times of great hardship, social programs were put into place to give those in need (an) opportunity to better their lives and contribute their skills toward making our country thrive. Civilian Conservation Corps gave underprivileged young men work. Many fought for our country in World War II. The GI bill helped veterans of World War II further their education, Social Security was put in place, and welfare programs help the poor and disabled. Without safety nets for the workers of this country and their families, we lose our reliable work force.
We are a democracy, by the people and for the people. I have no desire to try out USSR’s version of communism or any type of dictatorship.
We the American people can save our democracy from tyranny by exercising our right to vote. There is no reason why our country cannot guarantee free, convenient and safe access to vote regardless of race, color or previous condition of servitude.

Why divert $8B from pandemic?
The difference between America’s COVID-19 death and infection profiles and those of nearly all other countries is unarguably attributed to our Republican leadership. Avoidable carnage continues unabated. I am sorry to say, meaningful help will be long delayed.
Louis Gohmert made the world a more dangerous place with his “non-science” assertion that he could have been infected with COVID-19 by wearing a mask.
What could justify diversion of $8 billion from the Coronavirus Response Package to build more of the sketchy F-35 fighter jets, of some future war, rather than to respond to our highest priority, pandemic recovery.
Voters have previously accepted the anti-science and the frankly inhumane priorities held by Republicans. We must do better.
Our leaders needed to adapt to today’s realities and the Republican Party has failed that test. Our priorities should be dealing with the pandemic, not keeping privileged contractors in business. This is far more consequential than the dismissive “guns vs. butter” trope.
Our next opportunity to change course, late as it comes, is to elect Democrats at all political levels this fall. Praises for our Sen. Patty Murray. Vote for Democrats such as Doug McKinley.
Vote as if our families’ lives depended on it.

A rebuttal lauding the president
A rebuttal to Joyce Scherpelz's letter Aug. 23 is in order. U.S. Attorney Durham and (Attorney General) Barr are already coming through with "evidence" that the Obama administration was spying on Trump administration, more to follow.
Lives: This is a pandemic and affects the entire planet. The coronavirus dictates the terms, not Trump. Trump saved millions of lives by shutting down the U.S. border when he did. Unfortunately this thing is far from over.
The stock market is driven by a healthy economy started by Trump after the last disastrous presidency. Taxes: Trump gave 80% of America a tax cut, and when the virus hit gave us $1,200 and in line for another. If Scherpelz received a check, she needs to send it back with a letter of apology for being a hypocrite.
Military: Trump has rebuilt the military from the last administrations neglect and helped the vets. Law: Trump ask for aggressive action against the rioters, not legitimate protesters, which he has every right to do. International: Other countries, like the US, are slowing the spread of COVID-19 by shutting down their borders. Trump negotiated better trade deals and got us out of toxic international relationships like Iran and China.
