Letters: Construction complaint, partisan diatribe, sex ed and more | Feb. 19

Reader not seeing link to complaint

I’m trying to understand why my complaint about nearby construction work potentially damaging my house could lead one of your readers to conclude that I don’t care about the homeless. I do care — but if I were to detail how I try to help alleviate that problem, then I’d probably be accused of bragging.

Letters shouldn’t start with diatribe

Bink Owen, your letter to the Tri-City Herald was nothing but a partisan diatribe against a president who is improving life for Americans on a daily basis. I knew your personal politics when in the first paragraph you said “This orange, fatuous president ” You lost me right there and the entirety of your letter lost all credibility as you presented your argument starting with insults.

I get it that you don’t like Trump, but if you wish to make a valid point, you should try to write with some civility and coherent facts. It is abundantly clear that you are ignorant of reality.

February is all about hearts

February is American Heart Month — a time to bring greater awareness to heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.

While heart disease can take many forms, heart valve disease (HVD) is one of the lesser known conditions. Three out of four Americans know little to nothing about it.

But HVD affects as many as 11 million Americans. While it can be fatal, innovations in medicine have allowed many with the disease to receive effective, minimally invasive treatment.

But in order to seek treatment, you first have to recognize the signs and symptoms. That’s not always an easy task, especially when many symptoms of HVD, including shortness of breath, dizziness, and general fatigue, can easily be mistaken as “normal” signs of aging.

Those over 75 years old or anyone with a history of heart failure, diabetes, heart attack, or radiation treatment in the chest area for cancer at earlier ages, can be at risk for valve disease. Fortunately, a simple check-up at the doctor can usually identify a murmur — which is an irregular heartbeat and a telling sign of HVD.

On Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day this February 22nd, encourage yourself or a loved one to get their heart checked. It could save a life.

State sex ed plan too XXX for him

Parents and grandparents, wake up! The Washington State Legislature is pushing Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) as a public school mandated program from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Most parents want good basic sex ed for their children. They do not want seXXX ed, which is all the legislature and OSPI are willing to consider. If you need more information on these very bad bills, just go to myfamilymychoice.org.

They are also proposing school-based health clinics in all middle and high schools, with parents of children over 13 not informed about their child.

Call the legislative hotline at 1-800-562-6000 and leave a message for your senator and two representatives to oppose all comprehensive sex education and school based health clinics. You can do all that in about five minutes.
