Letter: Double-digit pay boost surprising

I am surprised that there have been no letters concerning the teachers’ demand for a double-digit increase in salary. I’m also sure my figures will be promptly corrected and I’ll get a proper put down. Current teacher salaries are approximately $57,500 per year on average in this area. The average work year is 182 days minus 28 days of paid holiday. The work day is seven hours.

And I have heard many times about all the hours teachers spend at home correcting home work. In all my 30 years as a teacher and administrator, the only teachers I saw working beyond the seven hours were the new ones who had not yet figured out the system. And they want to bump their salary up another $6,000? Who wouldn’t like to work 154 days a year and be paid over $63,000?

Hopefully some wise school boards who are watching over the over burdened taxpayers will put an end to that. And let’s not get started on way overpaid coaches. Why should coaches who really do not teach anything get paid so much more than teachers teaching the practical everyday needs of life, including team work?
