Letter: On immigration, what happened to the ‘family values’ party?
While you are having your coffee this morning, a father, a mother, or both, are being torn away from their families. Children are left without parents, confused and frightened. ICE, at this moment, is knocking on doors, putting a family member in handcuffs and taking them away from their loved ones. Thousands of longtime residents live in fear of that knock on their door. Some children are afraid to go to school. Dedicated workers are losing their jobs because they fear going out of their home when ICE is in the neighborhood.
Ironically, the family values political party (GOP) not only condones but promotes deporting these undocumented residents, even though they are contributing members of our community. America needs them. They are part of us. We as a nation are being torn apart. Homeland Security on this level is making us all less secure. If our neighbors are not safe, neither are we.
Tell Rep. Newhouse that the GOP needs to work with the Democrats to stop this inhumane ICE practice now. It’s time for the 2013 bipartisan Senate Immigration Bill to be revived to help save the soul of a once great nation.
