Letter: Republicans should reread Declaration’s preamble

The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Unfortunately, these “truths” do not seem self-evident for most women and millions of minorities because we have in political and economic power a group of predominately white men who do think they are above women and minorities. They believe they are above all moral codes of conduct and that laws do not apply to them. They manipulate their religiosity to rationalize their greed and self-promotion through the Prosperity Doctrine. We know this unequivocally because their words and deeds are denying mostly poor people and the middle class the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Republicans must decide if they will uphold the Constitution, and the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, or succumb to the corruption and social injustice so rampant in our society today. If you believe in the preamble and the Constitution, you have a constitutional duty to ensure that all women and minorities have the same rights as all white men. Period.
