Letter: Consistency needed to complete vit plant in timely fashion

The most recent exposé of the Hanford vit plant (TCH, Nov. 18) seems to be another story of people new to the project trying to re-invent wheels that were rounded out several years ago. That is frustrating to us as taxpayers and to the competent engineers and craftsmen trying to complete this complex plant in a timely manner.

In the TCH article was a sketch of the plant with Step 8 reading: “The canisters are sealed and exteriors are decontaminated, making them ready for permanent disposal.” Unless I slept through the latest discussion on a permanent disposal site, all these projected plant completion dates are meaningless. We have no place to send the end product!

When our current administration in Washington D. C. decides to move on this matter, they may decide to cast slabs instead of cylinders — and use them to “build the wall.” Voila!
