Letter: Follow rules, avoid chaos
Tina Derr’s letter on encouraging the city of Richland to be more involved with recycling (Nov. 9) points out a far-too-common phenomenon in our American society: The rules and laws apply to the other guy, not me.
I am all for recycling, but I do not have the time.
Speed limits are for the other guy; I am perfectly capable of driving fast. ... Cell phone talking while driving is dangerous and prohibited, but I have to make an important call to my boss right now. ... Darn dog poop in the park! Me, clean up after my dog? ... I am very concerned about the opioid epidemic, but I still expect my doctor to prescribe hydrocodone every time I get a little musculoskeletal pain. ... I know there was a double line where I passed, but there was no oncoming traffic.
Does it ever occur to such people that if everybody else thought as they think, we would have complete chaos, effectively no rules whatsoever?
As our country and our world become more populated, we are going to have to have more rules, not fewer.
We had all better get used to obeying rules.
