Letter: Thanks Herald, and all local newspapers

I shared a 70th birthday with the Tri-City Herald on Nov. 13. This gives me a special opportunity to thank you for the newspaper we have enjoyed for the 38 years we have lived in the Tri-Cities.

It amazes me how your team gets a newspaper out every day, with local, state, national and international news. We also appreciate all the work you do to be thorough and fair. I especially look forward to your analysis and recommendations for elections. The fact that you endorse candidates from both political parties speaks to your process.

Although I appreciate the electronic version of the paper, your website, and Facebook posts, I do not look forward to the day when we only get the news online.

A 2016 article by Ann-Derrick Gaillot identifies some of the reasons to love a local paper that also apply to the TCH:

▪ You help keep local leaders and institutions accountable.

▪ You break stories of national importance.

▪ National media outlets rely on local newspapers for information.

▪ Local newspapers bring jobs to smaller communities.

I ask others in the community to call, write or email the Tri-City Herald to thank them for being an important part of our community.
