Letter: Republican tax plan only benefits the ‘haves’

The Republican budget calls for cutting more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and $500 billion from Medicare. As a result, most seniors will be unable to continue to afford assisted living facilities, and many Medicare services will have to be eliminated.

But Republicans aren’t satisfied with just cutting $1.5 trillion. They promised their donors a big $3 trillion cut, so they’re also going to have to increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion. And, of course, almost all of the tax cuts will go to the top one percent.

Then there is the Republican tax overhaul plan, which is also going to hurt the middle class. Republicans also promised their donors to lower the top income tax bracket, which the tax overhaul plan does by raising the lower bracket from 10 percent to 12 percent.

As usual, the justification for these massive transfers of wealth is based on the idea that the rich will use their tax savings to create more jobs. So if you’re old enough to remember how well this crazy idea worked the last time, get off your butt and call Rep. Newhouse and tell him “no more tax cuts for the 1 percent.”
