Letter: When will slavery end?

About Black athletes; a recent letter-writer stated that players’ pre-game protests are peaceful, don’t disrupt games, and are therefore harmless and protected by the First Amendment. That writer also wrote that Black athletes’ reasons for protest are valid: Blacks are abused by police violence and injustice. Police are rarely convicted after murdering unarmed Blacks, including Black children.

But that writer also complained that the athletes are protesting in the wrong place. He wrote that protestors are harming children. How can observing democracy in action, harm children? Our schools teach our children that Protests (like the Boston Tea Party) created America’s democracy. Our soldiers die to preserve everyone’s right to protest injustice.

What does this sports fan want? He wants the athletes to protest someplace else. He wants to limit the Blacks right to protest only in locations where Blacks would be invisible to the public. When will inequality end? We punish Black athletes who disobey our opinions about expressing patriotism. When will slavery end?
