Letter: Story on McDonald family brought back happy memories

Tammy Aker’s article on the internment of the Japanese families from the Wapato area during WWII (Oct. 15) brought back memories from a different time and place.

Almost fifty years ago, as a young married couple, we established our first home in Wapato (one block from the Short Hardware store) as I began teaching there. As we settled in and made our new friendships, we joined a small country church in Parker Heights. We met the Dan McDonald family there, and their children and even some of the grandchildren.

Your story truthfully showed the generous and kind man that we remember. Some of the Japanese families mentioned in your story were my fishing friends and tennis competitors. Thanks for the memories.
