Letter: Commit to doing more to stop mistreatment of women

I am disgusted by the recent instances of despicable behavior by men against women. The fact that these toxic behaviors are not limited to high-profile men, but take place in our workplaces, schools and communities, makes it something vitally important for us to address.

I want women to be safe. Previously I thought if I were to treat women with dignity and respect, being an “example” would be enough. Unfortunately, it is not. With horrible male examples in high-profile places, we need folks from all walks of life to commit to make things better and create more safe places.

I commit to speak up, take action and, if necessary, protect when I see or hear someone treating a woman or girl disrespectfully. I don’t want kids who I coach or people I see in everyday life to think that I am oblivious to these issues or don’t care. I care. I am joining with others who are speaking out. I commit to do more and be better.
