Letter: DACA legislation would correct Obama’s failure

The headline reads, “Trump acts to shut down DACA program.”

How did we arrive at this situation? During President Obama’s first term, he had two years with a Democratic-controlled Congress to pass immigration legislation. Apparently, it was not a priority. Towards the end of the president’s first term, he stood at the podium and informed the nation that he did not have constitutional authority to grant amnesty to DACA children. Months later he did exactly that. Critics claimed it was a re-election tactic.

Today, President Obama criticizes the President Trump administration for its effort to shut down the program. In other words, President Obama denounces President Trump for correcting a problem he helped create. This seems like the height of hypocrisy. Even national Democratic leadership does not want to address the legal challenges by state attorneys general.

It’s time to support our president and Congress to pass a law that legalizes DACA children/adults and protects our nation from future similar situations.
