Letter: Preserve history by keeping street names

“Richland street names provide historical tool,” by Karen A. Miles, TCH 8/27/17, provides ample reasoning to preserve our communities’ proud history.

Robert E. Lee was a highly regarded U.S. Army officer for about 30 years who, among other things, distinguished himself as a brilliant tactician and brave battlefield commander during the war with Mexico. The Richland Historic Streets Project constitutes a valuable mini-history lesson. Street names and historic markers should not be swept away in a wave of ill-conceived political correctness.

Richland history is personal for me, as production here of plutonium for our first nuclear weapons likely saved the life of my cousin and the lives of thousands of other brave servicemen. Cousin Jack served on a Navy ship slated for the 1945 invasion of mainland Japan.

Don Mannion, Richland
