Letter: Pain of Powerball

So someone has won the $758.70 million Powerball jackpot! Congratulations!

If the winner was lonely, he or she will have many new friends, and family issues will be quickly resolved. The winner is now unambiguously in the 1 percent, and they will need to pay their fair share.

Some of us remember when the top federal tax rate was over 90 percent, and that should surely apply here. The state and municipalities can fight with each other over what remains, because they’ll need their fair share too. This will indirectly help the millions who paid for the win by buying tickets.

Proceeds will pay for government services and eliminate the national debt. The winner will still be OK. They were well enough off before, because they could afford to buy their tickets, and they will still be well enough off after they pay their taxes.

Just don’t quit your day job.
