Letter: Keep these things in mind to protect children

With the recent sex trafficking sting, it is as important as ever to be aware of the dangers online. Our youth can easily access others and be accessed by others intending to harm them. Tri-Cities is a wonderful place to raise families, but we cannot turn a blind eye to the horrific crimes that happen here in our hometown.

We are fortunate to have ICAC Task Force working diligently to help capture and prevent some of these sickening occurrences. In order to help protect our children, there are some things to keep in mind.

1. Be aware. Know that there are predators everywhere online. Know which sites, forums, apps that your kids are using.

2. Set rules. These rules can include time limits, asking permission before posting, sharing passwords, and using the Internet in central locations, where they can be easily monitored.

3. Teach privacy. Let them know what information is and is not safe to share online.

4. Take advantage of the parental controls that devices and internet providers offer. Be a safe place for your kids. Always encourage open communication with your children and let them know they can talk to you if they ever feel uneasy online.
