Letter: Distracted driving law is new way to control our lives

The new distracted driving law proves without equivocation that Jay Inslee and his liberal pals just want in our wallets. The intrusive, over-controlling government in Olympia has found new ways to take more of our money and new ways to control our lives.

We can get a $136 ticket for holding a cell phone while driving. No one I know has a problem with that, or with ticketing people who are grooming while driving. However, when stopped for any violation you have been seen drinking a swallow of water (which has been sitting in the drink holder conveniently located so that you don’t have to take you eyes off the road) they can add $99 to your fine! You now owe $238, and (God forbid) if you lit a cigarette while driving in your own car, that’s another $99.

They say they won’t stop you for these heinous offenses, but that’s what they said about seat belts, so pardon me if I don’t believe them. What’s next? Assessing a fine for sneezing behind the wheel, or blowing your nose? It's about the money and control of you and me. Fight back.
