Letter: The American people have spoken

Well, the American people have spoken, apparently.

They seem to be saying that it’s OK for men to grope women — in the workplace, on airplanes, in dressing rooms, anywhere. That it’s OK to pay women less for doing the same job as their male counterparts.

That it’s OK for big businesses to rip off their smaller subcontractors, and for “universities” to rip off their students.

That it’s OK to mock the disabled, and to discriminate against blacks, Jews, Hispanics, Muslims and Native Americans.

That it’s OK to send immigrants back to wherever they came from — never mind that anyone in this country who is not Native American ultimately came from immigrants — and never mind what is written on the Statue of Liberty.

In retrospect, however, perhaps I and others like me did not do enough in years past to overcome the circumstances that have led us to this point. I hope we will all work harder in the years to come to see that history does not repeat itself.
