Letter: Vote Patrick McBurney for appellate court judge

In Washington, appellate court judges are generally selected in nonpartisan elections. This is somewhat unique because not all states practice this cherished root of democracy. In fact, some states have uncontested retention elections after initial appointment and others grant life appointment. Patrick McBurney believes giving voters a choice is paramount in keeping our democracy strong and elected officials accountable to the electorate.

Unfortunately, many judges run unopposed. A review of the 2016 voter’s pamphlet shows many of these unopposed judges do not provide basic background information about their judicial philosophy or any information at all.

Having known Patrick for more than 20 years, I can attest to his character, wisdom, intelligence, and work ethic. He is also humble with a servant’s heart. Humility is a trait often forgotten by those in public service, but sorely needed in the judiciary as well as other branches of government.

I’m proud to recommend Patrick McBurney for Court of Appeals judge, Division 3, District 2, Position 2. He is worthy of your vote Nov. 8.
