Letter: Re-elect Patty Murray and Dan Newhouse to Congress

This national election has polarized our country like nothing I’ve ever seen through my 75 years. There are however, two bright spots for us here in the Tri-Cities — the opportunity to vote for both a Democrat and a Republican, and benefit our community in the process.

Democrat Patty Murray is running for the Senate, and Republican Dan Newhouse is running in the House. While their party philosophies differ, Patty and Dan have consistently been aligned on issues of importance to our community and state. They regularly demonstrate their ability to reach compromise to the benefit of both parties and both Houses.

They support Congress passing a budget, cleaning up Hanford, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, taking care of our veterans, returning unused federal lands to local control, renegotiating the Columbia River Treaty with Canada, prohibiting removal of Snake River Dams, agriculture and small businesses, and finding ways to prevent another port strike that greatly impacts our state’s economy.

Look at their voting records. While there are differences, on our important issues they are in concert.

Do what seems unthinkable in this election: Vote for both a Democrat and a Republican — Patty Murray and Dan Newhouse.

Please vote!

Gary Petersen, Richland
