Letter: Initiative 732 will have no impact on global warming
Initiative 732 is not about climate change. Supporters of I-732 say it is about reducing global warming, but in fact will have no impact.
The population of Washington comprises about 2 percent of the U.S. population and less than one-tenth of one percent of the global population. About 90 percent of our electricity is from hydro power. We have exactly one coal-burning plant in our state. Our state’s land mass is more than 50 percent forest, so much of our CO2 is mitigated by our trees.
China, India, and other major polluters are not going to be swayed by what the state of Washington does, and until they agree to reduce carbon emissions, global warming will continue. I-732 may make you feel like you are helping global warming, but in reality will have no affect.
