Letter: Control your own destiny and don’t tailgate

Recently, I encountered several drivers who were looking for a new hood ornament. My tendency is to drive at the posted speed limit. These individuals, who were just inches away from my rear bumper, probably felt they needed to arrive at their destination sooner. Or they were trying to intimidate me into going faster (shame on them if it is the later reason).

In either case, all they accomplished was to give me control over their safety and the condition of their vehicle. Personally, I do not want that level of control. I am busy watching for children, hounds, squirrels, elk and other vehicles that could dart out in front of me. I do not want to drive for the person behind me as well. These up close and personal drivers may not like the decision I make when a squirrel (or something else) jumps out in front of me.

In this world where we pride ourselves on making our own decisions, do not yield control of your destiny to the driver ahead of you. Give yourself the gift of distance and reaction time. The bumper you save may be mine.
