Update | New heat alert for Tri-Cities. When will these hot temperatures end?

A new heat advisory has been issued for the Tri-Cities as five days of triple-digit highs are forecast.

However, temperatures should not get as hot as in late July and early August when highs reached a peak of 112 degrees during a record-setting 11 days in a row of temperatures of 100 degrees or higher.

The previous record was a streak of 10 days of triple-digit highs ending Aug. 20, 1967.

The new heat advisory, which will extend across most of Eastern Washington, starts Wednesday when the National Weather Service forecasts a high temperature for the Tri-Cities of 104.

Highs are expected to be in the low 100s for four days after that, although the heat advisory is now set to expire on Friday, according to the weather service.

The Weather Channel predicts the streak of Tri-Cities triple-digit highs could reach 105 Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures should be back in the 90s for at least a few days starting Monday.

Normal highs for mid August in the Tri-Cities are in the low 90s, as they were over the past weekend.

The fire danger in Benton County is rated as “extreme” with no outdoor burning allowed other than for permitted emergency agricultural operations.

“Fires will start very easily and spread very rapidly,” according to information from Benton County. “Every fire start has the potential to become large. Expect extreme, erratic fire behavior.”

Washington state Trooper Chris Thorson used Twitter to remind people to keep all lit materials inside their cars as temperatures climb into the 100s again. Drivers who need to pull over to the shoulder should not park on dry grass, he added.

Ozone levels in the Tri-Cities are expected to increase this week, but remain “moderate” through Wednesday.
