Puyallup officer shoots, wounds man during domestic violence call
A man in his 30s was shot by a Puyallup police officer Friday evening after he allegedly charged the officer while holding a metal baton.
The man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Tacoma hospital, according to the Puyallup Police Department and the state Office of Independent Investigations.
The Tacoma Police Department's investigations unit will lead the team looking into what led to the shooting. The state's investigations office is also examining the incident, which was prompted by the man's grave injuries, even though he survived.
Just before 7:30 p.m. Friday, Puyallup police responded to a call from a woman who said her brother was trying to kill her," according to Puyallup police.
Before the officers arrived, the caller told police dispatch that the man was breaking windows in the house. When the first officer arrived, and was waiting for backup, the man allegedly "came at him in the street armed with a metal baton, according to Puyallup police.
The officer fired and hit the man, who was given emergency medical care before being taken to the hospital.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
Tacoma police were investigating the alleged crimes that led to the response and preceded the shooting, including two counts of first-degree assault and a violation of a protective order.
