Renton Walmart closes after apparent arson

Renton police on Friday evening responded to a fire that closed the Walmart on Rainier Avenue South.

At about 8 p.m., a person inside the store set some clothing on fire, according to the Renton Police Department.

At 10 p.m. Friday, fire crews were ventilating the store and officers had started an arson investigation.

In an email, Renton police spokesperson Meeghan Black said officers haven't yet identified a suspect.

Detectives are currently going through surveillance video to see if they can identify someone," Black wrote.

The fire didn't spread too far because sprinklers inside the building activated, she added, and damage from the fire and water was initially estimated at $100,000.

A Walmart spokesperson confirmed Saturday that the store remained closed.

"The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority," according to a statement from the company. "We're grateful for the swift action of first responders and we'll continue working with law enforcement as they investigate.
