Man arrested after allegedly driving at Pierce County deputy
A man allegedly rammed into Pierce County sheriff's vehicles and drove at a deputy while trying to evade arrest just outside the Tacoma city limits, officials said Sunday.
Shots were reported to have been fired, the Pierce County Force Investigation Team said in a news release. The release did not specify who fired the shots but noted that no deputies were hit.
The 23-year-old man also allegedly tried to enter homes and vehicles, officials said. He was taken into custody on Monday afternoon.
A Pierce County sheriff's deputy found the man slumped over in a vehicle near 72nd Street East and Ninth Avenue Court East around 2 a.m. Sunday, officials said.
After discovering that the man had multiple felony warrants including second-degree assault, eluding arrest and escape from community custody, sheriff's deputies parked their vehicles around his to prevent him from escaping, police said.
But once the man woke up, he started ramming the vehicles until he had enough space to escape, police said. He allegedly drove at a deputy and continued to drive away.
A few minutes later, police found the vehicle crashed, running and abandoned at a home about a mile south on the 900 block of 85th Street East, police said.
Residents in the area were calling 911, telling operators that a man matching the description had shown up on their property, apparently bloody and asking for help. They also said he'd entered homes and left after he was confronted.
Police searched for the man for 3½ hours using K-9 units and drones, but they were not able to find him until Monday, police said. During the search, residents were advised to lock their homes and vehicles.
