Child shot in Olympic National Forest
A child was shot and wounded in the Olympic National Forest early Sunday, according to the Mason County sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office reported that a 911 caller said his vehicle had been shot and child struck around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. The caller said he was driving to Mason General Hospital, where deputies contacted the family, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies determined the shooting had occurred in the Olympic National Forest in the area of Forest Service Road 23 and Spider Lake, 30 miles northwest of Shelton, according to the sheriff's office. In the area of the shooting, deputies detained a suspect who was booked into jail for investigation of first-degree assault.
The child was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment.
The sheriff's office said Monday that there are no community safety concerns, at this time. Additional information was not immediately available.
