Seattle weather: Sunday could break a temperature record

Get our your sunglasses and sunscreen, Seattle: We're in for a sunny, warm stretch in the coming days.

By Saturday afternoon, the morning clouds had cleared and temperatures reached the low 70s.

Sunday will bring another day of abundant sunshine" in the Seattle area, and warmer temperatures of around 80 degrees, National Weather Service meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch said.

The record for May 3 is 77 degrees, set in 1992 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, so it's very possible we'll break it tomorrow, he said.

Monday will also be around 80 degrees, but is unlikely to be record-breaking; the May 4 record is 85 degrees.

These temperatures are about 15 to 20 degrees above normal for early May, DeFlitch said. A high pressure system over the area is the cause of the warmth and dryness.

"We're starting to get slowly into the warm season: additional daylight, additional sunlight, increased heating," DeFlitch said.

The "unseasonably low humidity on Sunday and Monday will cause an elevated fire risk, the National Weather Service said in a Saturday afternoon briefing.

A dip in a lake or river might be tempting, but be careful - the water is still very cold. Lake Washington's water temperature was 56 degrees Saturday, according to a King County monitoring buoy. DeFlitch recommended wearing a life jacket and taking safety precautions.
