Tacoma's Foss High School stabbing: what we know
Six people were injured in a stabbing Thursday afternoon at Foss High School in Tacoma.
Five of those people were high school students, including the suspect, and the other was an adult security guard, police said.
There is limited information about the circumstances of the stabbing at the high school, which has about 550 students and 33 teachers, but here is what we know right now:
What happened?
Someone called 911 shortly after 1:30 p.m. to report "possible stabbings," Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The Seattle Times. There was an altercation at the school, police said.
Foss High School went into lockdown at 1:38 p.m., Tacoma Public Schools spokesperson Tanisha Jumper said in a news release.
Around 2:30 p.m., Tacoma police spokesperson Officer Shelbie Boyd told The Times the "scene is safe."
How badly were people injured?
Four of the students were seriously injured, Boyd said.
The fifth student, who is suspected of the stabbing, had minor injuries, Boyd said. They are now in police custody.
Police told The Tacoma News Tribune that the student suspected of the stabbing was booked on suspicion of five counts of first-degree assault. All of the victims were either cut or stabbed, police told The News Tribune.
The guard also had minor injuries, Boyd said.
All six people were hospitalized, Shepherd said, but they were in stable condition around 4 p.m.
When will students go back to school?
Students were released for pickup around 2:45 p.m. Thursday after the scene had been secured, Jumper said.
Foss High School will be closed for school and after-school activities Friday, according to an alert on its website.
The school will reopen Monday, the alert said. Counselors and additional administrative staff will be there to support students and employees.
