Mayor Katie Wilson rushed away following gunfire near news conference

Mayor Katie Wilson was rushed away from the end of a news conference at the Yesler Community Center on Tuesday night, following nearby gunfire.

Wilson was announcing a plan for Seattle Public Schools to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students, as well as expanded childcare.

Seattle police spokesperson Detective Brian Pritchard confirmed there were 911 calls shortly after 5 p.m. reporting several shots were fired and glass was broken.

A spokesperson for the mayor later confirmed the loud noises were, in fact, gunshots, and that Wilson was at the community center when the shots rang out. No injuries were reported.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooting was connected to the news conference. Nobody was reported to be in custody as of Tuesday evening, Pritchard said.

Police had no additional information Wednesday morning.

Pritchard said police were looking for three to four people in a dark sedan.

This shooting reminds us that violence has no place in our community. Our neighbors have the right to gather, speak, and celebrate without fear of violence," police Chief Shon Barnes said in a statement.

Seattle police did not provide information on whether shell casings were found or how close the gunfire was to the community center.

In a statement, Wilson called the shooting a "stark reminder" of gun violence.

"We cannot let this become normal," she said. "We must invest in opportunity, and we must continue working to keep people safe. Today's announcement was about making those necessary investments. And in the weeks ahead, I'll share more about our comprehensive strategy to address gun violence and public safety.

Those with information were encouraged to call the Seattle police tip line at 206-233-5000. Or dial 911.
